Answers to Your Top 5 Questions About Botox®

August 24th, 2020 | By: Timeless Skin Solutions
Botox® (aka, our new BFF) is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the U.S., and is certainly one of the most popular treatments at Timeless. In fact, Timeless Skin Solutions ranks in the top 1% of Botox injectors in the country … thank you!

The Most Common Botox® Questions Asked By Our Patients

Question #1: Where can Botox® be injected?

Since Botox® is a neurotoxin that works by blocking nerve signals in the muscles where it is injected, it only works on “dynamic” wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement. These types of wrinkles are often referred to as “expression lines,” and are commonly found on the upper face, such as the "11" between the brows, horizontal lines on the forehead, and crow's feet around the eyes.  While around the eyes and the upper portion of your face may be the most common areas for Botox®, it can be used to address wrinkles on the lower portion of your face, as well. Botox® can help address fine lines around your mouth, dimpling along your jawline, and the vertical lines on your neck. Botox® can even give you a fuller looking lip without the use of filler with the “lip flip,” by injecting it above the upper lip. “In fact, many of our patients who only started with the infamous “11’s” in their younger years, are now finding great results with frequent injections in other areas like the chin, mouth lines and jawline”, says Allyson Sterling.

Question #2: How long does Botox® last?

Botox® generally takes effect in 3-5 days, but you may not see your full results for up to two weeks. The effect of Botox® does eventually wear off, typically in 3 to 4 months, causing the muscles to begin contracting again and the appearance of wrinkles to return. The good news is that a typical appointment takes just about 15 minutes, and there is very minimal if any bruising.

Question #3: Can you exercise after Botox®? (Spoiler alert- our most frequently asked question!)

After an injection of Botox®, you should remain upright for at least four hours - so that means no pilates, swimming or even sit ups - and no vigorous exercise for at least one hour. Keep in mind that working out within 24 hours of receiving Botox® may reduce the results, as exercise increases blood flow through the muscles and can potentially diffuse the neurotoxin.  We do recommend, however, that you contract the muscles injected with Botox® for about an hour after treatment to allow the Botox® to flow into the muscle, resulting in a more long-lasting effect.

Question #4: Can men benefit from Botox®?

Botox® is an increasingly common cosmetic procedure among men, with competitiveness in the workplace cited as a major reason for the uptick. Men often feel pressured to boast a youthful appearance in a highly competitive job market, when Baby Boomers may be up for a promotion against up-and-coming Millennials. And with many men extending careers beyond the typical retirement age of 65, they want to look as energetic and enthusiastic as they feel (even on those Zoom calls!) In addition to workplace pressure, men also often get inspired to try the subtle, minimally invasive procedure after seeing great Botox® results on their spouse or significant other. And not surprisingly, social media plays a big role in the trend as well. Selfie, anyone?

Question #5: What age should you start Botox®?

There really is no “right age” to begin Botox®, only the right age for you. Over the past decade, it has become more and more common for our younger patients—those in their 20s and 30s—to request Botox® for wrinkle prevention rather than for the reduction and softening of existing wrinkles.
Because we lose collagen, elastin and bone volume in our face as a part of the aging process, we are naturally set up to wrinkle as a result of our everyday facial expressions and movements. But, if the muscles in the areas prone to  wrinkling don’t move, or move only slightly, the opportunity for wrinkling to occur is diminished.
When you choose Timeless Skin Solutions, you will get the results you want.
