What’s the difference between Botox and Dysport?

August 10th, 2026 | By:  Erin Olah, MD

If you’ve started exploring wrinkle treatments, chances are you’ve heard of Botox and Dysport. You may have even caught yourself wondering, “Are these basically the same thing with different branding?” It’s one of the most common questions we hear—and a fair one.

Short answer: they’re similar, but not identical.

Botox and Dysport: What They Have in Common

Before we dive into how these treatments differ, let’s review how they overlap.

  1. FDA-approved neurotoxins: Both Botox and Dysport are derived from botulinum toxin type A. When expertly injected, they temporarily block nerve signals to targeted muscles, allowing them to relax and softening the appearance of dynamic wrinkles.
  2. Treatment areas: Both are commonly used to treat forehead lines, frown lines (those “11s” between your brows), and crow’s feet.

At their core, Botox and Dysport are doing the same job in helping you look more refreshed, rested, and like yourself.

Key Differences Between Botox and Dysport

  1. Formula and Spread: While Dysport and Botox both contain botulinum toxin type A, their formulas still have some differences. Dysport, for example, has a slightly thinner consistency, which allows it to spread more easily once injected. This can make it a great option for treating larger areas like the forehead. Botox, on the other hand, is more localized, meaning it stays closer to the injection site, which makes it ideal for precision areas where control matters.
  2. Onset Time: If you’re looking for quicker visible results, Dysport tends to kick in a bit sooner—often within 2–3 days—while Botox typically takes about 3–5 days, with full results settling in around 10–14 days.
  3. Units and Dosing: Because Dysport is more diluted than Botox, you’ll need more units to achieve the same effect. The general conversion is approximately 2.5 to 3 units of Dysport = 1 unit of Botox.
  4. Longevity: Both treatments are temporary, but they don’t wear off overnight. On average Botox lasts about 4–6 months, while Dysport typically lasts around 3–4 months. That said, your results depend on factors like metabolism, muscle movement, and consistency with treatments. Some clients also notice longer-lasting effects over time with regular appointments.
  5. Type of Treatments: While both products are excellent for cosmetic wrinkle reduction, Botox has a few additional FDA-approved uses that Dysport does not.

Botox can also be used to treat:

  • Chronic migraines
  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • TMJ-related jaw tension

Botox vs. Dysport: Which is the Right Treatment for You?

Both Botox and Dysport are trusted, effective options for softening wrinkles without sacrificing natural expression. The “right” choice isn’t about which product is better; it’s about which one is better for you.

And that’s where a personalized approach makes all the difference. At Timeless Skin Solutions, we look at how your muscles move, how your skin responds, and what kind of results you’re really after. From there, we build a treatment plan that feels tailored to you, so you leave looking refreshed and not overdone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I extend the life of my Botox or Dysport?

There’s a few simple habits that can help make the effects of these injectables last longer. We recommend sticking to a consistent treatment schedule, avoiding excessive sun exposure (and always wear your SPF!), maintaining a good skincare routine, and staying hydrated to support overall skin health.

Is there anything I should avoid after getting Botox or Dysport?

Yes. At least for the first 24 hours:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Stay upright (no lying flat for several hours)
  • Skip rubbing or massaging the treated area

These precautions help ensure the product settles exactly where it should.

Does Botox or Dysport look more natural?

Both can deliver very natural-looking results when administered correctly. The outcome depends more on your provider’s technique than the product itself. For our providers, the goal is always softening movement, not freezing it.

Is one safer than the other?

Both Botox and Dysport are FDA-approved and considered very safe when performed by a trained, experienced injector.

How much Botox do I need?

Botox isn't a one-size-fits-all treatment. There are several factors to consider before deciding on the correct dosage, including the area you're treating and your desired results.
