Both treatments can help address sagging skin, but they work differently. Here's what to know before choosing the right one for you.
Maybe your jawline isn't quite as defined as it used to be. The skin around your eyes looks a little less firm, or you're noticing some looseness along your neck.
These are common changes as we age. And while skincare products can help maintain healthy skin, even the best creams and serums have their limits when it comes to sagging. Fortunately, non-surgical skin-tightening treatments offer ways to address these changes without surgery or significant downtime.
Ultherapy® has long been a popular option for lifting and tightening skin. Now, Density™ RF offers another approach, using advanced radiofrequency technology to improve skin firmness and texture.
Both treatments stimulate collagen, but the technology behind them is different. Understanding those differences can help you decide which option makes sense for your skin.
What causes sagging skin?
Collagen and elastin are responsible for much of the skin's firmness and elasticity. As we age, collagen production naturally slows, and the skin gradually loses some of its ability to maintain its structure. Sun exposure, genetics, and changes in weight can make these changes more noticeable.
Treatments like Density and Ultherapy work by delivering controlled energy beneath the skin to stimulate collagen production and improve the appearance of skin laxity.
How does Density™ RF work?
Density is a non-invasive radiofrequency treatment that uses two types of RF energy to target different levels of the skin in one treatment.
Monopolar radiofrequency delivers heat deeper into the skin, while bipolar radiofrequency targets more superficial layers. Together, they stimulate collagen remodeling to support firmer, smoother-looking skin.
Density may be an option for patients concerned about fine lines around the eyes, early jowling, softer jawline definition, and mild skin laxity along the neck.
Another benefit is convenience. Density uses cooling technology to help manage treatment discomfort, typically requires no numbing cream and involves little to no downtime. You can generally return to your regular routine immediately afterward.
Results develop gradually as collagen production increases over the following months.
How is Ultherapy® different?
Ultherapy also stimulates collagen, but instead of radiofrequency energy, it uses microfocused ultrasound.
The technology delivers energy to specific depths beneath the skin and includes ultrasound imaging so providers can see the tissue layers they're treating.
Ultherapy is FDA-cleared to lift the brow, neck and skin beneath the chin, making it an established option for patients concerned about skin laxity in those areas.
Like Density, Ultherapy works gradually as new collagen develops. Many patients see improvements over two to three months, with results potentially lasting a year or longer.
Density vs. Ultherapy — Which is better for sagging skin?
The biggest difference comes down to how each treatment works and the concerns you're hoping to address.
| Density RF | Ultherapy |
|---|---|
| Uses monopolar and bipolar radiofrequency | Uses microfocused ultrasound |
| Focuses on skin firmness, texture and mild laxity | Focuses on lifting and tightening skin in targeted areas |
| May address fine lines around the eyes, jawline definition and neck laxity | Commonly used for lifting the brow, under-chin area and neck |
| Cooling technology helps manage discomfort | Some patients experience discomfort during energy delivery |
| Little to no downtime | Little to no downtime |
Density may be worth exploring if you begin to notice changes in skin firmness, especially around your eyes, jawline, or neck.
Ultherapy may be an option if lifting loose skin beneath your chin or along your neck is your primary concern.
Of course, sagging skin isn't always caused by declining collagen alone. Changes in facial volume, fat distribution and underlying structures also affect how the face ages. That's why the most effective treatment plan starts with understanding what's contributing to the changes you're seeing.
Neither treatment replaces a surgical facelift, particularly when skin laxity is more advanced.
