Five Everyday Habits That Are Making You Look Older

September 6th, 2018 | By: Timeless Skin Solutions
There’s no escaping it, we’re all growing older every day. But some bad skin care habits can cause you to look much older than your actual age. Many of us are doing these things on a daily basis, and they’re making us age rapidly. Break these habits and you’ll automatically shave years off your appearance.

Blasting the A/C
Overusing air conditioning and heating systems can dry out your skin, making fine lines and wrinkles more noticeable. Invest in a humidifier to counteract the dry air and during the hottest months, give your skin some extra love with a hydrating night cream, such as Obagi’s Hydrate LUXE moisturizer or SkinMedica’s Dermal Repair Cream.

Skipping the sunglasses
Constant squinting in the sun can lead to major wrinkles around the eyes. Especially during the summer and on snowy winter days, we’re all susceptible to increased squinting. This repetitive squinting reinforces the crow’s feet, or small lines found around the eyes. Stash a pair of sunglasses in every bag you own to keep your face looking young and replenish those peepers at night with Obagi’s ELASTIderm Eye Cream or SkinMedica’s TNS Eye Repair.

Sipping through a straw
Any repeated facial expressions and movements will eventually break down collagen and elastin fibers in the face. Just like frequent squinting can contribute to crow’s feet around the eyes, repeatedly sipping drinks through a straw can cause wrinkles to form around the mouth due to the pursing motion the lips make. Even drinking from a non-reusable water bottle can lead to “smoker-style” lines around the mouth. To avoid these wrinkles, drink from a glass instead. JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC is a great option for filling in vertical lip lines as well as ThermiSmooth® for tightening and toning around the lip area.

Using sunscreen only on vacation
Most of us know better than to spend a day at the beach without slathering on the SPF. But even short amounts of exposure to the sun while running errands, driving around town, and walking out to the mailbox can cause excessive to harmful UV rays, which are present even when it’s cloudy or raining. Use an SPF between 30 and 50 for daily use, such as SkinMedica’s Total Defense + Repair Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50+.

Relying solely on a cleanser
Washing your face with a cleanser before bed is a smart step—but it’s not enough to take makeup off completely. Start by gently wiping off eye makeup and the rest of your makeup using toner and a dab of cleanser. Then, wash your face using a Clarisonic brush which cleanses the skin 6x better than hands alone. By doing so, you are removing the day’s grime, oil and pollution and allowing your skin to rejuvenate itself at night. Adding a hydrator such as SkinMedica’s HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator to your skin care routine will help reduce lines and wrinkles and restore your body’s own hyaluronic acid leaving the skin plumped and glowing. Finish off with a good moisturizer. The good news? The easiest way to avoid aging, as it turns out, is prevention in the form of proper skin care. Timeless can help guide you in selecting the best anti-aging products and procedures to keep you looking your best (and as young as possible!). Contact us today for a consultation!
