Medical Micro-Needling: Hot or Not?

December 16th, 2014 | By: Timeless Skin Solutions
When it comes to great skin, there are a lot of procedures, products and treatments out there claiming to be “the one.” Of course, we know that great skin requires a customized treatment plan. That’s why we offer personalized consultations that start with learning more about you, your skin and your concerns. At Timeless, our goal is to offer state-of-the-art, non-surgical skin care. Only after Dr. Clinton evaluates and approves a new procedure do we offer it to our patients.

Which is why we’re very excited to offer medical micro-needling!

Needless to say, we think medical micro-needling is most definitely hot. What’s not? Those crazy, at-home procedures with their risk of infection and scarring. Keep reading for the real-life diary of an actual Timeless Skin Solutions patient.

Jan’s Medical Micro-Needling Diary

Since I was a tween, I’ve been a self-proclaimed beauty junkie. Now in my 50s, I’m still interested in keeping myself looking my best without doing anything crazy. It’s one of the reasons I trust my skin to Dr. Clinton, Allyson and the rest of the Timeless staff.

Why did I get micro-needling?

I had gotten a little lax with my skincare routine and went to see Allyson for a SilkPeel. Allyson really helped me get back on track with the SilkPeel and updating my prescribed skin care regimen. Since Allyson and I both noticed texture changes to my skin, a little sagging along my neckline, and some acne scarring on my chin (I’m a picker!), she suggested, as part of my customized treatment plan, a series of micro-needling treatments. I was anxious to get started but since I had just had a SilkPeel, we set my appointment for four weeks later.

What happened during the procedure?

The day before my appointment, I got a call from the office saying a prescription had been called in for a topical anesthetic. I picked it up at my pharmacy and set my iPhone alarm for one hour before the procedure. When the alarm went off, I applied the cream to my face. (Don’t tell, but I did it right in the library where I was working.) After checking in, Allyson led me to the treatment room where she prepared my skin. First she washed it with a gentle cleanser. Then she wiped on something that smelled a whole lot like nail polish remover. She told me it’s a medical-grade quality acetone/alcohol combo that helps sterilize the skin to prevent infection. Then she showed me the micro-needling device. It was so small! She explained the entire procedure in detail to me (read about it here) and we got started.

Did it hurt?

I thought it might but no, not at all. It did feel strange, though. “Rough” might be the word for it. Allyson was really good about checking in with me at every step to make sure I was fine, which I was. I do think the numbing cream really helped so I would never think of skipping it! She went over each section of my face three times and I could literally feel my pores starting to breathe. I loved that part of it. Toward the end of the procedure, after having my entire face and neck treated, I was kind of, sort of ready to be done; but not because I was in pain. I was just feeling a bit sensitive and sunburn-like. Most importantly, I was excited to see how I looked!

Immediately after micro-needling treatment at Timeless Skin Solutions Here’s what I looked like right after. This is my selfie on the way to my car.You can see that my skin is red and a little splotchy.

How long did I stay red?

Less than a day. I returned home immediately following my procedure and, honestly, I’m glad that I didn’t have to go back to an office. I was a little too red and sensitive to not be conspicuous so I prefer scheduling my treatments on days when I can spend the rest of the day at home. Of course, if I had to go somewhere, I certainly could have. The redness started to fade within the first hour and got better throughout the evening.

Less than 24 hours after micro-needling treatment But here’s what I looked like the next morning, less than 24 hours later: No redness. And look at my glowing, clear skin! My skin feels super soft and smooth, too.

Do I recommend it?

Yes, yes, yes. I cannot believe how much better my skin looks and feels in such a short period time. I can really feel the texture difference and see a much more even skin tone. My acne scars are hardly noticeable and I’m pretty sure the lines I was starting to see above my upper lip are gone, too. Allyson has recommended a series of treatments so I can’t wait to see the difference after another couple of treatments.
