As temperatures begin to rise, most people start shedding layers when it comes to our wardrobe. However, when it comes to skin care, it’s essential to continue layering your products.
Different products serve different purposes, and applying them in the correct order will ensure each can do its job effectively. The general rule of thumb is that your thinnest skin care products should be applied first and thickest last. Allyson Sterling, PA-C, says, “Products that make the most impact on your skin should go on first… and don’t forget your neck and chest!”
Before getting started with your skin care routine in the morning and evening, you’ll want to cleanse your skin to provide a clean canvas for the rest of your products. One of our favorite cleansers is
SkinMedica’s Facial Cleanser. Appropriate for our skin types, it removes environmental pollutants, excess oil and makeup, and hydrates and refreshes the skin. The perfect first step of your skincare regimen!
If you use a toner to balance your skin’s pH, you’ll want to use that right after cleansing, then follow up with any prescription products, such as topical acne medication. If you use
Retinol to help with cellular turnover, you’ll want to put that on after cleansing in the evenings. Retinol helps brighten skin and improve fine lines and wrinkles, however, it can also be drying. We suggest starting with a low dose, so you may only be using Retinol every other day.
If you don’t use any prescription products or Retinol, the first product you’ll want to apply after cleansing is
TNS Advanced+ Serum or
TNS Recovery Complex. These all-in-one anti-aging serums contain growth factors that stimulate collagen, helping to improve fine lines and tighten skin.
What’s important to know about growth factors is that, just like collagen, they are naturally found in our bodies, but diminish over time. Typically, when we are 30 years old, we still have the same amount of growth factors naturally occurring, but by the time we are 50 we only have about half the naturally occurring growth factors! And, sadly, it goes down from there.
SkinMedica’s TNS is a proprietary, proven growth factor, and the
TNS Advanced+ Serum is a second-generation growth factor and is the only that is clinically proven to address sagging skin. In addition, it supports rapid, comprehensive skin rejuvenation with significant, visible improvements in coarse wrinkles, fine lines, and overall texture.
Next up are any correctors you may use. An example would be brightening serums, such as Obagi Nu-Derm Clear #3 with Hydroquinone, or
Lytera® 2.0 Pigment Correcting Serum that can help correct any pigment issues you may be experiencing.
Consider adding a hydrator to your regimen, which is a great corrector that everyone can benefit from. Our favorite is
HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator, which takes the science of hydration to a whole new level. It’s the only hydrator that provides an immediate smoothing in the appearance of lines and wrinkles while supporting the skin’s natural ability to replenish its own hyaluronic acid.
We can’t stress this enough: always—always—wear an SPF sunscreen! All year round, even on cloudy days, the sun’s UVA and UVB light can cause damage to your skin. Sun exposure is the top cause of aging, making sunscreen an essential step in your beauty routine.
We recommend
Total Defense + Repair Broad Spectrum Sunscreen, a revolutionary “superscreen” that goes beyond just UV protection and also protects against infrared rays—plus, it can support the skin’s ability to restore its elasticity and firmness, correcting sunspots, lines and wrinkles. Another favorite is
Colorescience Sunforgettable SPFs that is easily applied over makeup, and is the perfect sunscreen to keep in your purse or car so you reapply throughout the day.
