Treating Different Areas of Sun-Damaged Skin

May 21st, 2024 | By: Timeless Skin Solutions

As much as we'd love to channel our inner Sheryl Crow and soak up the sun all the time, our skin tells us it's not the best idea. UV rays trigger the production of free radicals in the skin, leading to DNA damage, wrinkles from collagen and elastin breakdown, and skin discolorations from increased melanin production.   However, it’s nearly impossible to avoid the damaging rays of the sun entirely. While clouds and glass windows can block UVB rays from the sun, UVA rays can penetrate right through them, making sunscreen a crucial part of your daily routine to prevent skin damage.  But what about those of us who have been a bit lax with sunscreen, made regular trips to tanning beds, or *dun dun duuun* leveraged the aluminum foil and baby oil method for a tan? Signs of sun damage may have already appeared across our faces and bodies – but not all hope is lost.   While we can’t completely reverse the effects of sun damage, several treatments can effectively lessen its visible signs.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, stands as a proven and effective solution for addressing sun damage nestled deep within the skin. This treatment utilizes light energy, which is absorbed by pigment cells and subsequently converted into heat. This process works to eliminate unwanted pigmentation, reducing the appearance of sun damage and freckles.   The outcome is lighter and less conspicuous pigmentation, making it ideal for clearing up sunspots and freckles while enhancing skin texture, tone, and color, all without any downtime. Even better? Regular IPL treatments actually increase collagen production, which gives your skin an even tone and healthy appearance. Great for: Face, décolletage, arms, hands, and legs.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels offer an effective solution for combating sun-induced damage, namely discoloration. By gently exfoliating the outer layer of the skin, chemical peels stimulate the production of new collagen and encourage the growth of healthy skin cells. This process helps minimize the appearance of lines, wrinkles, uneven texture, brown spots, acne, and enlarged pores.  During your consultation, our experienced provider team will assess your skin to determine the appropriate peel to address your concerns and meet your aesthetic goals.   Great for: Face, neck, and hands.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with Levulan®

By utilizing light or laser energy, PDT effectively targets conditions such as sun damage, precancerous cells (actinic keratosis), acne, and inflammatory rosacea. Known for its ability to enhance cellular turnover and stimulate collagen production, PDT offers diverse applications for improving overall skin texture, tone, anti-aging effects, and acne management.  Great for: Face, scalp, and upper extremities.  Sun damage isn’t entirely avoidable, but it doesn’t have to overshadow your skin's health and vitality. At Timeless, we understand the impact of sun damage, from wrinkles to discoloration to stubborn sunspots, and offer a diverse range of effective treatments customized to target visible signs of sun damage.   Before recommending any treatment, however, we take the time to sit down with you, evaluate your skin, and devise a personalized SkinScript tailored to your unique concerns. Because one size doesn't fit all when it comes to your skin. Book a consultation today!
